AI Search Visibility: Getting Cited in AI Overviews and ChatGPT

AI search visibility is how often answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity cite your pages when they write a response. The route to being cited is, for the most part, good SEO itself. On top of that, you need to check crawler access, the way your content answers questions and the footprint your brand leaves across the web.

How answer engines choose their sources

Most of these systems first look up relevant pages in a search index before writing anything. They then pull the relevant passages from those pages and build the answer on them. So you need to be indexed first, and then answer the question clearly in a distinct section.

Google is direct about this. Its page on AI features says there is no special optimisation for AI Overviews; a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. In other words, the fundamentals of SEO still apply.

Microsoft Copilot draws on the Bing index. ChatGPT search relies on its own crawler as well as results from search partners. That is why it pays to add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools rather than focusing on Google alone.

Check crawler access

The first step is making sure bots can reach your site. Many sites block AI crawlers without realising, through security plugins or copied robots.txt templates. These are the main bots to check:

Bot Owner Used for
Googlebot Google Search and AI Overviews
Google-Extended Google Gemini training, no effect on rankings
Bingbot Microsoft Bing search and Copilot
OAI-SearchBot OpenAI ChatGPT search results
GPTBot OpenAI Model training

OpenAI describes each bot's role on its crawlers page. If you do not want to allow model training, you can block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot. That way you keep appearing in ChatGPT search results.

Beyond robots.txt, bot protection at the server or CDN can also block these crawlers. Services such as Cloudflare may have settings that block AI bots by default. Make those choices deliberately.

Write answer-first content

Answer engines quote the section that best answers the question, not your whole page. Each section should therefore make sense on its own. These rules make quotation more likely:

  1. Put the answer first: the first two sentences under each heading should answer that heading directly.
  2. Write self-contained sections: phrases like "as mentioned above" make a quoted passage meaningless.
  3. Be specific: thresholds, steps, dates and names are easier to quote than general statements.
  4. Use tables and lists: comparisons and processes are easier to read when structured.

Every post on this blog follows that principle. The first paragraph always gives a short answer to the question in the title. Our technical SEO audit guide is a good example.

Strengthen trust signals

Answer engines pick sources they consider reliable from dozens of pages that answer the same question. Google's guidance on helpful content sets out the signals of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. Those signals matter for AI answers too.

In practice, this means:

  • Every post has a real author name and a short note on their expertise.
  • Claims link to primary sources such as official documentation.
  • The company name, address and contact details are easy to find from any page.
  • Publication and update dates are visible on every post.

Establish your brand as an entity

Language models recognise brands through connected information across the web. If your name, what you do and where you are appear consistently in different sources, the model is more likely to describe you correctly.

Add organisation and local business structured data to your site. Update your social profiles, Companies House record and directory listings with the same name and description. Our local business schema guide shows how to add the local markup.

Mentions on independent sites also matter. References on local news sites, trade associations and partner pages help a model associate you with a topic. Do not try to buy them; create something worth sharing instead, such as your own observations, guides built from customer questions or support for a local event.

Approaches to avoid

Because this field is new, plenty of questionable methods circulate under the label of "AI optimisation". Some are harmless but pointless; others carry real risk.

The first is showing different content to AI bots. Serving one page to users and another to crawlers counts as cloaking under Google's spam policies and puts the whole site at risk. Bots and people should see the same content.

The second is producing thin pages that ask the same question in hundreds of ways. Such pages create no lasting value in search or in answer engines. One strong page that covers a topic thoroughly gets quoted more often than dozens of weak ones.

The third is publishing AI-generated content in bulk without review. Using tools for drafts is fine; the problem is unverified claims and generic sentences going live. Someone who knows the subject should read every post and check every figure against its source.

How to measure visibility

Measurement here is still developing. Google includes clicks from AI Overviews in the overall web performance report in Search Console and does not offer a separate filter. You can still track progress in a few ways:

  • Watch referrers such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com in your analytics.
  • Once a month, ask these tools the core questions your customers ask and note whether you are cited.
  • Add a "how did you find us" question to your contact form and include an AI assistant option.

What to do over the coming months

AI search is changing quickly, but the foundation is not: crawlable, indexed content that answers clearly and rests on reliable sources. Start by checking robots.txt and your bot protection settings. Then rewrite the opening paragraphs of your five most important pages so they answer first.

To see where your site stands technically, run our free SEO checker. It also checks robots.txt access for AI crawlers. To write titles and descriptions in the same answer-first style, see our guide on how to write meta descriptions.

Frequently asked questions

Will adding an llms.txt file improve my visibility in AI answers?

llms.txt is a proposed file format for giving language models a summary of a site, but it is not yet a widely adopted standard. Google says AI Overviews need no special files and that normal Search rules apply. Adding one does no harm and takes little time. Even so, crawler access, content quality and making sure your pages are indexed deserve your attention first.

If I block AI crawlers, will my Google rankings drop?

It depends which crawler you block. The Google-Extended token controls whether your content is used to train Gemini models and does not affect Google Search rankings. Blocking Googlebot, on the other hand, removes you from Search entirely. At OpenAI, OAI-SearchBot handles search and GPTBot handles model training separately. You can opt out of training while still appearing in ChatGPT search results.
